Speaking of Social Security
02.25.05 (9:52 am) [edit]

Watching the noon news I had a few thoughts. As they continue to plague me I thought I'd put them here.
When the temperatures hit extreme highs and lows there is a concerted effort around France to find the homeless streetdwellers and try to talk them into a shelter. If they refuse they are of course given blankets, hot food and drink. Before anyone asks, I don't believe people can be forced to take assistance. No, they don't arrest people as vagrants here or I've never seen or heard of such a thing. Homelessness hasn't become a crime yet here in France.
Profiles were done on 2 people who were 'literally homeless" (littéralement sans domicile).
One was a man who looked to be in his 40's. He was lying in the snow. He did not even have a coat on. When they tried to communicate with him he was unable. No doubt he would have died soon. They managed to get him to a hospital and hopefully from there he will be given some help in getting the social assistance he needs.
The second person was an old black lady. She was sitting on a bench with the contents of her life in a huge bag beside her. She had to be at least 70+ years of age. She was well bundled up but in these temps no amount of covering is good enough to keep a body warm indefinitely. They were having a difficult time talking her into moving to a shelter. She did accept a hot drink. Oh yes, she enjoyed a cigerette also (oh the horror).
In light of all the talk from the far right these days about every man and woman for themselves, no government assistance, save your money, be responsible for yourselves, get a job you loafer, these people are not my responsiblity and I'm damn sure not paying taxes to take care of them...
I'm not sure how these 2 people found themselves in the street. I have lived long enough and through enough of my own difficult circumstances to know life has a way of disturbing the best laid plans. If you can afford the fallback protections some societies offer you may survive the loss of your job, a freak accident, incurable disease and other such mundane events. If you have family or friends that care enough you may also survive when the ice breaks putting you in the middle of the freezing river. But, there is an entire population of people who have no one and the bare minimum they have is not enough to take them through a crisis.
I have yet to see any of these working so hard to do away with social assistance with a working plan on how to deal with the 'have nots' of this world. They cannot be ignored as they are trying very hard to do. They cannot be classified as bums and drug addicts not wanting to work. They cannot be classified as not worthy of the 'right to life' because of their situation or regardless of what put them there.
"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist."

A Conversation with Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg: Bush Lied
02.23.05 (8:42 am) [edit]
The following is from an interview with Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg at The Palestine Chronicle.
Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg is well known as a historian of Judaism and of American Jewry, a feisty intellectual, and a voice of influence in the fight for justice in the United States and Israel. Now retired, he is Bronfman Visiting Professor of Humanities at New York University. I'd like to go to a subject that we discussed a bit last week: the question of religious fundamentalism, rising across major religions.
That is a horror. Let me tell you a story. Some 10 or 15 years ago, I was invited to Tokyo—the only time I've spoken in Tokyo, to an inter-religious meeting, of a variety of opinions in the traditions which are not Biblical. And the question was: What is it, that Biblical religions hold in common, and more important still, that they have in common with the non-Biblical religions?
And I said: The great disaster is, that we are now increasingly identifying ourselves by what we assert as our truth, our virtues, our right, our powers. And therefore, we are making war, and not peace. That the function of religion, at its most serious, is not to encourage the believers to say, "I'm right and you're wrong," because "I'm right and you're wrong" means war, means holy war, and the most disastrous of holy wars. I think what we must change over to, is the notion that what religions have in common, is their duty, and their passion for defending the defenseless, whoever they are, whatever tradition, wherever they come from.
And therefore, I regard Christian and Jewish fundamentalism, and all other forms of fundamentalism, as the enemies of God—and I hope you'll quote me on that: "As the enemies of God."
Jewish fundamentalism, Christian fundamentalism teach them, that they are right about everything, and we and those who don't agree with them, are going to fry in Hell. Jewish fundamentalism is teaching that Jews can fight with guns and with civil war, against being relocated off the West Bank, and disobey the orders of their government. That is the call to jihad, to several kinds of jihad.
Moral values, if you want to use them correctly, begin with love of your fellow man. And if they teach, not love, but hatred; if they teach you to be certain that your fellow man is part of what the Christians once called, when they wanted to beat up on Jews, a part of the "Synagogue of Satan," then it is the call to war, it is the call to fascism, and it makes God into Hitler! Quote me.
It is one's religious duty to stand up to all of this.
I agree wholeheartedly with Rabbi Hertzberg. Read the entire interview.

Scott Ritter Says U.S. Plans June Attack On Iran
02.22.05 (7:31 pm) [edit]
Scott Ritter, appearing with journalist Dahr Jamail yesterday in Washington State, dropped two shocking bombshells in a talk delivered to a packed house in Olympia’s Capitol Theater. The ex-Marine turned UNSCOM weapons inspector said that George W. Bush has "signed off" on plans to bomb Iran in June 2005, and claimed the U.S. manipulated the results of the recent Jan. 30 elections in Iraq.
On Iran, Ritter said that President George W. Bush has received and signed off on orders for an aerial attack on Iran planned for June 2005. Its purported goal is the destruction of Iran’s alleged program to develop nuclear weapons, but Ritter said neoconservatives in the administration also expected that the attack would set in motion a chain of events leading to regime change in the oil-rich nation of 70 million -- a possibility Ritter regards with the greatest skepticism.
The former Marine also said that the Jan. 30 elections, which George W. Bush has called "a turning point in the history of Iraq, a milestone in the advance of freedom," were not so free after all. Ritter said that U.S. authorities in Iraq had manipulated the results in order to reduce the percentage of the vote received by the United Iraqi Alliance from 56% to 48%.
Asked by UFPPC's Ted Nation about this shocker, Ritter said an official involved in the manipulation was the source, and that this would soon be reported by a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist in a major metropolitan magazine -- an obvious allusion to New Yorker reporter Seymour M. Hersh. ufppc
Mixed messages from Bush
In a joint press conference with E.U. officials Bush was asked if the U.S. felt obligated to get approval from the U.N. Security Council before launching and attack on Iran. Bush said, "This notion the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous."
"Having said that all options are on the table," Bush immediately added.

Devastation and grief in Iran
02.22.05 (6:51 pm) [edit]

Where have you gone? I had a lot of plans for you," Hossein Golestani sang softly to the lifeless form of his 7-year-old daughter, Fatima, held in his arms. The body of his 8-year-old daughter Mariam lay beside him in the devastated village of Hotkan.
Golestani and his wife were out tending their herd of goats when the quake struck at 5:55 a.m. wrecking their home. Other survivors slapped their faces in grief as they sat next to the dead, wrapped in blankets in hospital morgues or on roadsides.
As nighttime came, temperatures fell and rain turned to snow in parts of the mountains, and survivors huddled around fires to keep warm, covering themselves in blankets and sipping hot soup. Some 1,500 workers from the Iranian Red Crescent fanned out in teams, bringing tents and tarps.
"I lost everything. All my life is gone," sobbed Asghar Owldi, 60, his face bandaged. His wife and two children were killed.
The death toll stands at 420, with some 900 injured.
My heart goes out to them all. What can you say or do to ease their pain? How do you lose your family and all you own but the clothes on your back and remain sane?

The White House Stages Its 'Daily Show'
02.22.05 (12:15 am) [edit]
The pre-fab "Ask President Bush" town hall-style meetings held during last year's campaign (typical question: "Mr. President, as a child, how can I help you get votes?") were carefully designed for television so that, as Kenneth R. Bazinet wrote last summer in New York's Daily News, "unsuspecting viewers" tuning in their local news might get the false impression they were "watching a completely open forum." A Pentagon Office of Strategic Influence, intended to provide propagandistic news items, some of them possibly false, to foreign news media was shut down in 2002 when it became an embarrassing political liability. But much more quietly, another Pentagon propaganda arm, the Pentagon Channel, has recently been added as a free channel for American viewers of the Dish Network. Can a Social Security Channel be far behind?
It is a brilliant strategy. When the Bush administration isn't using taxpayers' money to buy its own fake news, it does everything it can to shut out and pillory real reporters who might tell Americans what is happening in what is, at least in theory, their own government.

Dealing for peace and justice
02.21.05 (10:28 pm) [edit]
Indonesian students carry Palestinian flags and shout slogans calling for a free Palestine, Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, in Jakarta, Indonesia. The protestors were part of a group of demonstrators participating in a march to commemorate United Nations Human Rights Day.
I haven't posted on this issue in awhile. I'm not sure why. Perhaps because of hopelessness. I hate that word because there is always hope. But, even in light of Palestinian elections, Abu Mazen's attempts to woo both sides you know it won't work. House built on broken foundation will soon collapse.
Abu Mazen cannot make deals with Sharon that continue to leave the Palestinian people under occupation and essentially no better off than before. I don't fault Mazen for doing whatever he can. One has to try. But, there can be no peace without justice, ever. For the sake of peace people will live under subjugation for a time. A few released prisoners will quiet them down temporarily. An extra bowl of rice will calm the hungry belly until it begins to growl again. Until the Israeli people realize the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people are in essence no different from those committed against them by the Germans there will be no hope, no change and no peace.
Two Palestinians were shot and wounded by Israeli soldiers manning the border between the southern Gaza Strip and Egypt on Sunday.
A 16-year-old was also shot in the back in Khan Yunis by troops protecting nearby Israeli settlements.
a 73-year-old Palestinian was wounded in the face when a group of Jewish settlers stoned the car he was driving in near the southern West Bank town of Bethlehem.
Ten Palestinians were wounded on Monday in clashes with Israel Defense Forces troops during a demonstration against the separation fence east of Modi'in.
Vandals deliberately contaminated the Palestinian village of Madama's water supply. It is the only source of water for the village's 1,700 residents.

Free speech—or un-American?
02.20.05 (7:13 am) [edit]
A controversial play with an Oscar-winning actress portraying Laura Bush reading to dead Iraqi children will go on despite a local official blasting the show as "anti-American propaganda.'' "I'm not an anti-free speech nut," said Bill Donovan, a North Adams city councilor who was outraged that the Tony Kushner play was being held at the C-T Plunkett Elementary School in Adams. The play is not school-sponsored. "The play (implies) over and over that the American military fighting the war on terror are baby murderers. That's what I object to," said Donovan, whose son is serving in Afghanistan.
Donovan said he objected to the play's content and that it was being put on in a public venue. He asked the Adams-Cheshire School District to bar the play, but they declined. Boston Herald
Good for them. But, it seems all don't feel this way. Here are a few comments found at Free Republic.
This is why the "arts" in this country are becoming increasingly seen as the enemy. This is cultural terrorism on your tax dollars. We desperately need a renaissance of the arts. But these trendy leftists know they can get money for insulting ordinary Americans.
If these clowns hate America and love socialism and communism so much maybe they should try moving... see how long they last elsewhere! I would bet dollars to donuts not a one of them has ever set foot in Iraq or Afghanistan much less laced up a pair of combat boots in their lives and been in battle! If these Beantown morons ever ventured out of their cozy existence in New England to places like Viet Nam, Germany, Poland, China and Russia and actually conversed with those who lived and suffered under Nazism and Communism they might, just might be in for a very rude awakening...and then again...there are none so blind... Semper Fi
well we all know the M.O. of these clowns... they hate America but live here they hate democracy but refuse to leave they hate the military while it protects their rights and freedoms to spew their vile anti-American rhetoric and when the rubber hits the road you don't see any of these clowns at the recruiting offices.
Their hypocrisy knows no bounds...

To a friend
02.19.05 (9:35 pm) [edit]

My husband and I received the following from a dear friend and comrade today. As he passed this on to all of his friends who linked him I'm sure he won't mind me posting it here. Even in this short email you can feel his heart.
I would like to thank you very much for linking to my blog Youngfox Canada. I am honoured that you would think enough of it to bother linking at all. Due to unforeseen and presently insurmountable circumstances I will no longer be able to update the blog and it will be deleted. Everybody hates a dead link - so this is your notice that the Youngfox Canada link on your page will be emptied.
I have truly enjoyed my short year of blogging and the experience was made more vibrant and valuable by getting to know your thoughts and feelings. I cannot begin to describe my heartfelt wishes of joy and contentment for you and yours. Please be safe, happy, and healthy.
Find the love that always exists in the darkest places and use it to light your way. Never let the hateful individuals and masses that seem so abundant these days, set the tone of your life. May your words and deeds continue to illuminate this seemingly endless twilight that has fallen across our world. Don’t let the bastards get you down.
Thank You. Peace, Youngfox
Youngfox has been a source of strength, hope and joy for my husband and me in the time that we have known him. I hope we can now be all of that for him.
Thank you, Youngfox, for being you.
Love, Dianne

Latin America Considers New US Intelligence Chief a Terrorist

Latin America is shocked with the appointment of John Dimitri Negroponte as director of intelligence, a man that helped write the worst pages of US imperial diplomacy with his support to governments charged with gross human right abuses.

Bush = War
02.18.05 (4:53 pm) [edit]
Maybe I'm reading things wrong but the language I'm hearing used by the Bush administration and from the neo-con blogs leads me to believe they have decided, in interest of the US, they must create democracy in the middle east and they are willing to do it militarily. They in fact think it's God's will for them to do so. The attack on muslims in the states has already begun. The likes of Ann Coulter is their mascot.
Coulter wrote in a syndicated column on September 12 that in responding to terrorists "we should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."
The problem with Ms. Coulter's words is she thinks 'all' muslims are terrorist as do the neo-cons or at the very least they can't be trusted 'because' they are muslim. Actually, there's more than one problem with Ms. Coulter. She's a bigoted nationalist. Let's get that straight from the getgo. The following was found in the comments of Cao's blog.
"Unfortunately, the imams and holy men of Islam are calling for all muslims–especially the “moderates” to pick up the sword–in the United States. It appears to me as though that’s begun. It already happened elsewhere–in Canada, in Britain, in the Netherlands with the murder of Van Gogh…it was only a matter of time that it would happen here."
The true face of Islam is showing. They disregard all laws and freedoms people possess and make sure that people know that they will enforce their Sharia law in the lands of the infidel.Comment by Cao — 2/14/2005 @ 5:42 am Bush say's yesterday that Syria is out of step with democracy in the middle east. Who is Mr. Bush to tell a 'middle east' country they are out of step?
"We've recalled our ambassador, which indicates that the relationship is not moving forward, that Syria is out of step with the progress being made in the greater Middle East, that democracy is on the move, and this is a country that isn't moving with the democratic movement." As many of us were saying before his re-election Mr. Bush has a much bigger war plan than Iraq. He makes it seem he's doing everything he can to avoid it. Of course, he is now trying to mend fences with those he scorned before the Iraq invasion. Taking on Syria and Iran with the US military stretched thin already will take 'allies.' I for one will be in the streets day and night marching against any move of the french government to align itself with a US invasion plan.
"Iran is different from Iraq, very different," the president said. "There's more diplomacy, in my judgment, to be done. And we'll work very closely with our European friends and other nations."
After days of escalating US-Syria tensions following the assassination of Lebanese former prime minister Rafiq Hariri, Bush emphasized a multilateral approach as he pushed Damascus to withdraw its 14,000 troops from Lebanon.
"My first goal is to remind both Americans and Europeans that the trans-Atlantic relationship is very important for our mutual security and for peace, and that we have differences sometimes, but we don't differ on values, that we share this great love and respect for freedom," Bush said.
"I look forward to working with our European friends on my upcoming trip to talk about how we can work together to convince the Syrians to make rational decisions," he said. This kind of language doesn't work here in Europe. We know all too well Mr. Bush's idea of 'values, love, respect and freedom.' Our neo-con buddies will let you know they don't expect help from 'old europe' and don't want it either.
Vice President Dick Cheney raised the possibility in a radio interview last month that Israel might attack Iran if evidence materialized of a successful nuclear weapons program.
One questioner at yesterday's news conference raised that possibility, but Bush sidestepped the issue, saying: "Iran has made it clear . . . they don't like Israel, to put it bluntly. And Israelis are concerned about whether or not Iran develops a nuclear weapon, as are we, as should everybody."
He did declare that the United States would support Israelis "if their security is threatened."
I'm more concerned about US and Israeli nuclear weapons as they are the only ones who seem to be intent on using them on other people.
It looks like Russia is lining up with Iran at least for the moment.
"Iran's latest actions convince us that Iran indeed does not intend to produce nuclear weapons, and it means that we will continue our cooperation in all areas, including in nuclear power generation," Putin said. "Of course we hope, dear Mr. Rowhani, that Iran will strictly adhere to all of its obligations." Deja vu anyone?
Ah well, nothing like a little war mongering and hate to start out the day. I wonder who's going to getted nuked first? I'm sure if the US has anything to do with it they will cast the first stone.
Americans who want peace better get out there and say so, plus sign any impeachment petitions you can find.

Middle East Peace or War?
02.16.05 (11:01 pm) [edit]
Fury at al-Hariri's funeral
Former prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri was laid to rest in central Beirut on Wednesday amid scenes of anger as thousands of mourners poured into the streets chanting anti-Syrian slogans.
"Syria get out, Syria get out," yelled the crowds. A woman in black shouted hysterically, "Syria messed up Lebanon. Let them get out of here. I don't want to see a Syrian face."
Others called on the government to resign. "We don't recognise the current government. They are ruling us by force," Radwan Itani, 45, said. Aljazeera
U.S. and France puts pressure on Syria
The U.S. and France, partners in the pressure on Syria to implement UN Security Resolution 1559, which calls for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Lebanon, have now pulled the Hariri assassination from the domestic Lebanese arena and made it an international issue.
The U.S. offered the Lebanese government its assistance in the inquiry, offering to send FBI investigators. But the goal apparently was much more far-reaching: with the assumption being that the current situation in Lebanon with regard to its relationship with Syria cannot go on, even if it turns out that Syria was not involved in the assassination, and the assassination should be used to accelerate the Syrian departure from Lebanon. Haaretz
Russia to Sell Advanced Missiles to Syria
Russia said on Wednesday it wanted to supply Syria with advanced missile systems, a move certain to anger the United States which accuses Syria of having links to terrorism. Reuters
Iran to aid Syria against threats
Iran has vowed to back Syria against "challenges and threats" as both countries face strong US pressure. "We are ready to help Syria on all grounds to confront threats," Iranian Vice-President Mohammad Reza Aref said after meeting Syrian PM Naji al-Otari. BBC
Iran, Syria Missles Can Target U.S. Interest
A senior U.S. official said Iran and Syria have developed ballistic missiles that can destroy U.S. targets in Iraq as well as in nations aligned with Washington. The official said both countries have received significant assistance from North Korea, which has sought to sell complete missile systems to the Middle East.
"Iran and Syria can currently reach the territory of U.S. friends and allies with their ballistic missiles," Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control Stephen Rademaker said. Middle East Newsline
Iran Explosion Sets Off Fears of Attack
An explosion in a southern city prompted instant fears Wednesday of a missile attack in an area where Iran has a nuclear facility, and Iranian authorities gave conflicting explanations for the blast including Iranian friendly fire in a military area and construction work.
The explosion came hours after the country's intelligence chief confirmed U.S. drones have been flying over Iran for months to spy on nuclear and military facilities. ABC

Why we denounce George Bush
02.14.05 (9:57 am) [edit]
This entry was written for Pourquois Pas but in an effort to have it seen by as many as possible it is crossposted here and The Progressive Blog Alliance.
Some people feel we are just another bash George Bush group. They tell us how tired they are of hearing us and would we please shut up. No matter what any of us say I imagine their minds won't be changed. But, in an effort to straighten this matter out I'm going to share mine and my husband's thoughts and reasons for denouncing George Bush.
Unlike many we are not Democrats. This is not part of a political campaign. We do not even live in the states. I am an American citizen. My husband is not. We along with so many others on the planet watched the runup to the Iraq invasion in shock and disbelief. We could not believe this monstrous war machine was going to actually bomb a defenseless people.
We listened to inspectors, humanrights organizations, leaders of countries that knew Saddam and Iraq well. They were all saying 'No, this is not right.' We listened and we watched as the US overuled them all. We watched France, Germany and Russia try to stop it with a vote. The US said we don't need you and if you are not with us, you are against us.
We watched from our televisions with tears in our eyes and screams in our hearts as innocent people died by the thousands. There was no hatred of America or George Bush, only despair. The invasion of Iraq was and is a travesty of justice that no one expected a country such as the US would ever consider.
But, we didn't know the heart and mind of George Bush. We do now and we fight him in every way we can. We point out every fault in an effort to stir up those that have the power to bring him down. We act within our legal rights. We live in a country where freedom of expression is fought for rather than oppressed.
Today we know George Bush, Colin Powell, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and oh so many others lied about their reasons for the invasion. The US was not in any danger from Saddam or the Iraqi people. That is a fact not an opinion.
In my own judgement I believe that George Bush knew it was going to be a piece of cake. As surely as they sold us satellite pictures of fake labs they knew the impotency of Saddam and the Iraqi people. Iraq was no more than a lab rat to test US military might. The 'oh so masterful campaign' was 'shock and awe' only in it's ability to strike fear in the hearts of any that think to stand in the way of US power.
I cannot change the minds of those who choose to stand behind this man. I cannot stop them in their desire to annul our freedom of speech. I can only continue to tell the truth as we all know it.
Our fight against George Bush is not political. It is a humanitarian fight. It is a fight against indignity and against oppression. It is a fight for freedom and democracy in the truest sense of the words.
George Bush has attained power in the states that would be unthinkable in other parts of the western world. He has become a President with few checks and balances and I imagine the few he has will not last long unless the American people wake up to what is happening within their great country. Those of us in Europe recognize all too well the making of a totalitarian state.
Many on the right will scream, 'traitor, we are at war!' I would say to them, "I cannot betray my conscience. I must be true to my convictions. Anything less would indeed be treachery.

America's crisis is fascism
02.12.05 (10:28 pm) [edit]
Chris Bowers has put together a list that makes for compelling and frightening reading. America ignores fascim already in operation at her peril.
The F-word by Chris Bowers
The same administration that distributed fake news releases to promote its Medicare legislation, which were cited by the GAO as illegal propaganda;
The same administration that distributed fake news reports to promote its drug policy, which were cited by the GAO as illegal propaganda;
The same administration that paid a public relations firm to promote its education law with fake news reports, and to rank newspapers on their coverage of said education law;
The same administration that paid Armstrong Williams to promote its education law (a payment he never disclosed);
The same administration that paid a National Review columnist to promote its marriage legislation (a payment she never disclosed);
The same administration that paid another columnist to promote that same marriage legislation (again, a payment he never disclosed);
The same administration that is forcing the Social Security administration to promote its own destruction;
The same administration that allowed a potential male prostitute with no journalistic experience to get White House press credentials using a fake name, from a fake news source, so he could ask fake ideological slanted questions;
The same administration then gave said reporter access to the classified documents that led to the outing of a CIA operative who was married to a critic of the administration;
The same administration that engaged in all of these acts of propaganda and intimidation of critics is now threatening stations if they run a MoveOn ad that opposes their plan to destroy Social Security.
Oh yeah--and they are creating do-not-admit lists for public events based on perceived political views.
Oh yeah--and their allies are calling us traitorous for suggesting troop withdrawal.
Oh yeah--and they think reporters should not be allowed to use anything except administration talking points.
Oh yeah--and their allies want to destroy a children's cartoon for supposedly being too pro-gay.
Oh yeah--and they want to regulate what can be taught in colleges and universities on ideological grounds.
And they support torture polices.
And they support internment of minorities.
And they support pre-emptive war.
The word fascism has come to mean any system that: exalts nation and sometimes race above the individual, uses violence and modern techniques of propaganda and censorship to forcibly suppress political opposition, engages in severe economic and social regimentation. engages in corporatism.
There is a crisis in America, but it is not Social Security.

02.12.05 (7:14 am) [edit]

It will be necessary for you to visit this site in order to appreciate this post. "Men's Night Out" at the local church turned out to be a recruitment event complete with flag, cross and bible.
"We want honestly to earn the resurrection of our people through our industry, our perseverance, our will. We ask not of the Almighty 'Lord, make us free'!-- we want to be active, to work, to agree together as brothers, to strive in rivalry with one another to bring about the hour when we can come before Him and when we may ask of Him: 'Lord, Thou seest that we have transformed ourselves, the German people is not longer the people of dishonour, of shame, of war within itself, of faintheartedness and little faith: no, Lord, the German people has become strong again in spirit, strong in will, strong in endurance, strong to bear all sacrifices.' 'Lord, we will not let Thee go: bless now our fight for our freedom; the fight we wage for our German people and Fatherland." -Adolf Hitler, giving prayer in a speech on May Day 1933

US Should Clean Up it's Own Backyard on Rape
02.11.05 (9:06 am) [edit]
We've been bombarded recently with news of sexual violence abroad. The reports of horrific attacks on women and girls as young as 8 in the Darfur-Sudan crisis and rampant sexual exploitation at the hands of United Nations peacekeepers in the Congo are just two examples.
When rape around the world gets headlines and public outrage, why is there a culture of silence about rape in America?
Among industrialized nations, America has the highest incidence of rape. A woman is sexually assaulted in America every two minutes, a rate 13 times higher than England and 20 times higher than Japan.
Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It's estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year 1.2 million women are forcibly raped by their current or former male partners, some more than once.
Adding insult to injury, literally, is our nation's poor record of successful prosecution. Among reported rapes, there is just a 16 percent chance that the rapist will ever serve time in prison. Factoring in unreported rapes, about 15 in 16 rapists walk free. It's no wonder that barely one-third of women who are sexually assaulted come forward to the police.
General Rape Statistics
Every 2 minutes a woman is raped in the U.S. 72 of every 100,000 women are raped in the U.S. each year. 28% of women are raped by boyfriends. 35% of women are raped by acquaintances. 5% of women are raped by relatives. Less than one third of all rapes are reported to the authorities.
Youth Rape Statistics 15% of rape victims are under the age of 12 (another source said as high as 22%). 29% of rape victims are between the ages of 12 and 17. 44% of rape victims are under the age of 18 (another source said as high as 54%). 80% of rape victims are under the age of 30.

We Can't Count on the French
02.10.05 (5:13 pm) [edit]

I turned on the news last night and caught the tail end of an interesting story. It was about a soldier who died in Iraq. There was an interview with his parents, living in Antibe, who told of his love of all things military since childhood. He was French but had lived in the states since a teenager. He had first visited America as an exchange student, loved it and wanted to stay. His name, Patrick Marc M. Rapicault, Captain, US Marine Corp. He had dual nationality. He considered himself American as well as French. I wanted to find out more about Cap. Rapicault but failing to write down his name I had to Google what information I had. I entered every relevant word I could think of but came up empty. There was nothing on a French, American soldier who died in Iraq. Of course, if I had put only Americans I would have recieved thousands of page hits. I was troubled by this and knowing how so many Americans love to hate the French decided I would investigate further. A quick call to the television station got me his name. No problem with Google finding listings for Captain Rapicault from St. Augustine, Florida. On every page and I looked at many, telling of Captain Rapicault's death not once was it mentioned he was French. Captain Rapicault died November 15, 2004.
I read hatefilled remarks about the French daily. It no longer surprises me in fact, I've grown to expect it. The following would no doubt be this persons words to honor Captain Rapicault.
"I can’t stand the French-the United States bailed France out of two world wars–of three world wars, if you count the Cold War–the French somehow imagine that America poses a serious threat to their wellbeing." We Can't Count On The French and much more can be found at this sepulcher of US patriotism.
A French citizen goes to Iraq to fight against the coalition makes good hate material. A French citizen dies fighting with the coalition gets not a mention. Yes, he was a US citizen and I'm quite sure proud of it. But, he was also French. In fact, he was called 'Frenchy.'
One person's words to honor Captain Rapicault.
"Repose en paix, Frère d'armes.
You choose to fight for another country than the one where you first saw the light of the day and you served with gallantry. There's no citizenship difference between soldiers.
Au revoir, mon frère!" Edmond of Paris, France

Fascism on the march
02.07.05 (6:19 pm) [edit]
In spite of many in the past year likening the current political trend on the far right to fascism our words went unheeded. Mr. Bush managed to get re-elected (barely) and as such the neo-fascist have pulled out the big guns. Perhaps you haven't seen it yet but you probably aren't an American woman living in France and married to a frenchman.
For those of you who don't know me, I am Dianne. I have been living in France for 5 years. I have been fighting the current administration's policies since before the Iraq invasion. In that time I have met the neo-fascist. I have visited their blogs and read things to make your blood chill if you have any knowledge of German history and Hitler's rise to power. The neo-fascist have met me and from the comments they leave, no doubt it is just as well I am in France. My husband and me have our own space dedicated to us on certain websites declaring me a traitor and much more. As my husband is French you can imagine what is directed at him.
I read an article earlier today that describes the new constituency perfectly. Strangly enough the writer is Conservative. Just as Progressives, Liberals, Independents, Greens, Socialist need to find common ground we need to seperate the wheat from the chaff within the Conservative party. As can be seen in this article they are indeed trying to do this themselves.
As usual I will share some of the bits for those just interested in the highlights that form the point of my title. Thanks to Iddybud where I found the link.
Lew Rockwell, wrote a year-end piece called “The Reality of Red State Fascism,” which claimed that “the most significant socio-political shift in our time has gone almost completely unremarked, and even unnoticed. It is the dramatic shift of the red-state bourgeoisie from leave-us-alone libertarianism, manifested in the Congressional elections of 1994, to almost totalitarian statist nationalism. Whereas the conservative middle class once cheered the circumscribing of the federal government, it now celebrates power and adores the central state, particularly its military wing.”
Rockwell describes a populist Right website that originally rallied for the impeachment of Bill Clinton as “hate-filled ... advocating nuclear holocaust and mass bloodshed for more than a year now.” One of the biggest right-wing talk-radio hosts regularly calls for the mass destruction of Arab cities. Letters that come to this magazine from the pro-war Right leave no doubt that their writers would welcome the jailing of dissidents. And of course it’s not just us. When USA Today founder Al Neuharth wrote a column suggesting that American troops be brought home sooner rather than later, he was blown away by letters comparing him to Tokyo Rose and demanding that he be tried as a traitor. That mood, Rockwell notes, dwarfs anything that existed during the Cold War. “It celebrates the shedding of blood, and exhibits a maniacal love of the state. The new ideology of the red-state bourgeoisie seems to actually believe that the US is God marching on earth—not just godlike, but really serving as a proxy for God himself.”
I don’t think there are yet real fascists in the administration, but there is certainly now a constituency for them —hungry to bomb foreigners and smash those Americans who might object. And when there are constituencies, leaders may not be far behind. They could be propelled into power by a populace ever more frustrated that the imperialist war it has supported—generally for the most banal of patriotic reasons—cannot possibly end in victory. And so scapegoats are sought, and if we can’t bomb Arabs into submission, or the French, domestic critics of Bush will serve.
The American Conservative
If you don't believe the words of this article then take time to peruse some of my lengthier comments. If you still don't believe contact me and I can give you a list of websites where these folks live. They are fascist and must not be allowed to gain anymore power than they have now.

Expectations
02.07.05 (1:21 pm) [edit]

I don't expect God to do anything for me or anyone else outside himself. I have considered the lilies of the field many times, but more often, the tiny piece of beauty struggling it's way up through the cracks of this planet, and instead think... what's expected of me?

Beginning the Social Quest
02.05.05 (8:39 am) [edit]
While reading and taking an occasional peek at a television documentary the other night (with the sound off), I happened to see some old black and white footage of a Socialist protest in America. I cannot tell you how it surprised me. I even put my book away and turned the volume up on the television. Active Socialist in America? I've never heard of such a thing not even in high school history class.
I've run into a few modern day American Socialist on the internet but they are few and far between. And although the Socialist Party is alive and well in the states one could hardly tell from the attention they receive in the media. I know there are plenty of Progressives that claim Socialist agendas but I think calling oneself a Socialist is taboo for one reason or another. It's not hard to understand why, I suppose. The Socialist Party has certainly bred its power hungry tyrants throughout history. But, after living in Europe for several years where Socialist are a major influence in government and in a very large way responsible for my having decent healthcare and a roof over my head in spite of being unemployed, I became curious as to why Socialism is relatively dead in America.
I will probably hear from those few American Socialist protesting my pronouncement of death but, for all it matters, the Socialist Party is dead in America.
Was there a Socialist Presidential candidate in the last election? Can you answer this question without using Google?
I think this will be an interesting venture for me. I will continue to post on other issues but look for my 'Social Quest' to be a series of journal entries probably for quite a long time.

No Freedom Without Justice
02.04.05 (7:37 am) [edit]
Facts and just ordinary common sense are no longer relevant for many people today. Even those that believe in God and claim to know his word make him a partner in their crimes. Those of us who have a clear vision, in whose minds the facts are not obscured by the impressions of a flag, words about freedom and democracy, comparisons between a dictator and good ole' Texas boy, political agendas made righteous by an inkstained finger and oh so many other irrelevant and emotional issues are now being perverted into abstraction.
The facts of an election held in Iraq where only part of the still repressed population who managed to escape death were able to vote, 1441 American military casualties in Iraq, 10,770 American wounded in Iraq, an estimated (we don't do body counts) 17,884 Iraqi civilians killed because of military intervention, lie after lie told by a U.S. President will not be allowed to subvert imperialism and the flow of middle east oil.
So wave your flag of freedom bought with innocent blood. Talk about Saddam's crimes rather than Bush crimes. Talk about Muslim fundamentalist who terrorize and ignore Christian fundamentalist whose ways and means are no different. Paint those of us fighting for truth, peace and justice as traitors because we are truthful, peaceful and want real justice for all on this planet. But, we will not ignore the facts. Mr. Bush says, "No justice without freedom." We say, "No freedom without justice."

I am withdrawing for a bit to think about some important issues regarding my life. Being the mercurial personality I am I cannot predict how long I will be gone, but I will more than likely be back sooner than expected.

For relaxation purposes I will also be destroying my current template. Yes, I am a mercurial masochist.

To my friends and enemies
02.01.05 (10:31 pm) [edit]
Just a short one to say thanks to my friends that have visited and lent support to this ongoing fight against Bush tyranny. I haven't responded to any of your latest comments but I will very soon.
I appreciate you.
To my enemies I say thanks also. Your comments give credence to the cause. Your ignorance is only surpassed by Mr. Bush. Please do continue to visit and regurgitate. I will soon have enough material to write a book. It should be interesting. There is one thing I would ask of you. It would help if you would leave your names so I can credit you.
